A MESSAGE FROM A QUEER FEMINIST
2020
This series follows the belief of fighting against the oppressive forces that chained the minority down. Whether they be queer, female, a person of color, or of a different faith, this series will act as a potential platform to make their voices heard.
Special thanks to those who have allowed me to hear their stories and utilize these posters as your platform. I will continue this series and I hope that others will feel as if they too can share their experiences and unfiltered thoughts in a safe space.
VERSION ONE
Initially we as a class are tasked with selecting 2-3 articles and create a project of our choice based on these readings. After picking 3 articles that I envision relating to each other and with myself, I then created brief overall concepts of the readings individually. ("Queer Manifesto", "Hacker Manifesto", "Wild Poet's Manifesto").
VERSION TWO
Thinking about traditional posters, I then created this series with the focus of combing the text from these 3 articles into one. Keeping the uniformity and typography layouts similar to each other. This is the phase where I was still unsure of what I planned on doing and what I wanted this project to be about.
//I want the able-bodied, white, heterosexual male to have to work harder.
//I want them to get down from their pedestal of entitlement and become someone else.
-The Wild Poet
if it doesn't work for
the poor
the disabled
lesbians
the outcasts in society
then it wasn't worth fighting for
AS A
Feminist
//the women of Bangladesh are targeted with dangerous contraceptives with the end of "depopulating Bangladesh"
//women in the western world are targeted with reproductive technologies, the dual purpose of perfection and consumerism
//wild reproduction engages women in purposeful resistance to the commodification of women's bodies
//end the commercial control over women
I PLEDGE AS A
Feminist
//to fight for what works for the poor, the disabled, for lesbians, and for the outcasts in society
//to bare my truths, naked with honesty, not exposure
//to resist the commodification of women's bodies
//to have able-bodied, white, heterosexual males to work to our standards and not theirs
Hacker
//to recognize our distinctive existence as a group, programmers, artists, writers, scientists or musicians
//freeing information from its material constraints
//to create new worlds, but do not possess them
Queer
//to strive for open and inclusive language and culture
//to be open to one another, new people and ideas
//to work together to build a movement and community
//to break down binaries and live in the grey
//to love whoever we want without fear of discrimination
signed with very real goals and a desire to change this oppressive society
-A Queer Feminist Hacker
The Wild Poet
//she walks the city to see the world face to face. walks down seedy laneways climbs to the top of the highest building wishes she were a bird flying through the air
//the wild poet has an aesthetic that is like a plant growing in soil. she does not try to replicate the known world. the unknown world is her home she writes of the invisible the hidden the story gone astray. she is the uncultivated plant the one that grows in spite of pesticides and monocultures. this plant grows on the pattern of Bionacci numbers spiraling into timeless time, like a refracting crystal it is multifaceted, filled with voices from many places. long filaments blow in the wind
//the wild poet is specific. she uses local colour and language. she makes jokes that not all readers will get. here is a chance she says to change how you think. come with me on this journey of exploring our minds. come and see the world through my eyes. put yourself in my shoes. let your fingers feel.
//she bares her truths. naked with honesty no exposure. a straight talker with a bent perspective.
VERSION THREE
It was a Saturday night, I was annoyed by something on social media and so I turned to my laptop and designed the following posters with this pent up emotion in mind. I took the frustration, anger and hurt feelings from past experiences and embedded them into the following posters. Ideas that came to mind was the censorship of women and minorities in everyday settings, personal conversations I've had with my reaction, and quotes from the article in a sort of propaganda setting.
"Being gay is a choice. Since you've never been with a man, you don't really know if you're gay or not"
Did I ask for your OPINIONS? Ask for your OLD SCHOOL thinking? You say you are open to new things (LOL) but your mindset says otherwise. You say you're up on trends??? But you struggle with views that are not your own.
I AM WHO I AM. I LOVE WHO I LOVE. I AM LIVING MY LIFE WITHOUT YOUR INPUT.
How does it feel to know you're wasting your time and energy thinking about me and my "problems" when I don't give a shit? I am as straight as a curve. I am happier than I have ever been.
With all sincerity and cold regards, go fuck yourself.

HACK THE CYSTIM
AND YET WE DONT QUITE KNOW WHO WE ARE WE RECOGNIZE OUR DISTINCTIVE EXISTENCE AS A GROUP AS PROGRAMMERS AS ARTISTS OR DO NOT OR SCIENTISTS OR MUSICIANS WE RARELY SEE OWN WAYS OVEREPRESENTING OURSELVES AS MERE MUSICIANS WE RARELY SEE THESE WHAT OF WE OURSELVES AS MERE FRAGMENTS OF A CLASS EXPERIENCING THAT IS STILL STRUGGLING TO EXPRESS ITSELF PRODUCE AS EXPRESSIONS OF THE PROCESS OF PRODUCING ABSTRACTIONS IN THE WORLD OWNS AND FREAKS OF WHAT THEY ARE TENTATIVELY THROUGH THEIR EXPRESSION BY US
While designing the previous posters, I realized I wanted to add a touch of human likeness to it in order to make it more personable. By having human profiles within the posters, it makes it more realistic that these are about actual human beings and not just empty words on a poster.
I am a woman of culture. Politics
More than a color. Journey
Complex. Queer. Breaking down barriers
FINAL VERSION
It was after designing the previous version that I came to realization that because of the every day censorship of minorities in society, I wanted to create a platform that would allow those to speak their truths. After creating a Google form which provided questions and a place to rant, I took the responses and designed their truths with their consent. One of the questions was to write key words that they associate with. In a society where us minorities are not heard, this is where they were free to scream into the void we call society without fear of backlash. Link available at the top of the page.

HATE HAS NO HOME HERE
My GENDER IDENTITY is pretty inconsistent and sometimes my gender ISN'T EASILY RECOGNIZABLE when looking at me at first
So I get STARED at a lot when walking down the street.
For white folks they see me as
NON THREATENING and "EDUCATED"
As if I shouldn't be?
GENDER IS FAKE.
Mind your own business.
To white folks, yes I know words.
MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS

I will work to
continually expand the boundaries

To breaking down walls
