BOOK DESIGNS

The following book designs are classified as group projects from University. While some I may have had a hand in designing, others I may have focused on the creative aspect more.

CYBER SOUP (2020)

Creative Writing | Graphic Design | Mock Up

Part of a class project with fellow graphic designers, we each talked anonymously in a Google doc, using text settings to differentiate one person from the other in sentences, and claimed a conversation we partook in as text for our individual designs. Each designer had a dedicated spread they designed in the book itself. I will only being showing my spread and the conversation I took part in with two other designers.

Thesis: There is something inherently vulnerable about technology's ability to sequester. It has driven us further into social isolation while amplifying communication within itself. Mundane conversations have been lost as computer screens became the face of society. The sense of unfamiliarity brought new forms of intimacy online. The design presents the evolution of conversation on a web application, under the constraints of short prompts. Each page spread is a collection of short conversations designed by the platform's user - experienced as a collective, yet felt in a variety of ways on an individual level.

I'm sorry. I love you. I am neglected by touch, care, and communication with loved ones because of isolation. I love you. Here if you need anything. Gracias :) Intimacy is scary lowkey. You gotta reaaaaaally personal about stuff you normally wouldn't be. I am afraid of intimacy. That works too. Why? Oof we gonna get that personal?? Abuse. Yikes lol aw. WE LOVE YOU. Yeah it's hard. I think we partially risk that people do not like talking for sure. Commitment is fucking hard! Used to have commitment issues, it was so weird. The very concept of it was so bizarre to me. I think i crave it maybe for a sense of belonging. We love you. I'm sorry. I love you. Here if you need anything. I don't think it is that TOXIC. I think a lot of people think the idea of having someone, that in itself is a needed sense of belonging - meaning a lot to someone vice versa. It's hard to be open to being vulnerable. I think is something that comes easier for some than others. That is true. I am bad at intimacy id rather avoid it and allow myself to overthink it in isolation than confront my feelings. Even if i am in a relationship, i catch myself doing that for the most part. It's tough not to.

UTOPIA VISION (2020)

Creative Writing | Graphic Design | Mock Up

This book design was part of a group project with fellow graphic designers. We were tasked with creating a publication of our choice on any topic. In the age of the pandemic with lockdown, my group decided to create a dystopian magazine titled "Utopia Vision". To play off the irony, we focused on a design that is fun and whimsical, with the deeper meaning and text far more darker than what is seen on the surface.

In a group of four, we decided to divide the workload in half with two designers and two content creators. The content creators, a role that I took on, would create the darker themes written throughout the magazine. The magazine was split into sections for movies, anime, music, and books, all sections only focusing on dystopian works. The designers would then take the writings from the creators and apply whimsical designs that do not reflect the darker meanings.

BLU (2018)

Iconography | Graphic Design | Typeless Design

As part of a Form & Image project for class, we were tasked with taking a company and describing its story without the use of text. In its place, we utilized icons downloaded from Noun Project to visually tell a story. For my organization, I chose Bike Lane Uprising due to the fact I appreciate their mission and have previously worked for the founder.

"Bike Lane Uprising®️ is a cyclist-led civic tech platform.  We're focused on making cycling safer by making it easy to report bike lane obstructions.  We find trends in the data to hold violators accountable and prevent future obstructions...Even though Chicago was named the most bike friendly city, cyclists are still killed each year and many more are injured." -Excerpt from the Bike Lane Uprising site
